HMI got involved in this project, in the summer of 2019, after the original mechanical water source heat pump design had come in significantly over the owner’s budget. Hampton Mechanical owned complete design services and entire HVAC installation for this Design-Build project, including stamped mechanical drawings from a Licensed Professional Engineer of the Mechanical discipline. One of our biggest challenges with the project was setting the rooftop equipment. The streets were too narrow, and the sidewalk areas were covering several utility vaults, preventing the crane, that was needed, to be set up safely. In the months leading up to the lift, HMI’s welding shop was busy fabricating custom racks and stands for the Condensing Unit Banks that make up the outdoor equipment of the VRF system. HMI then enlisted Midwest Helicopters, from the Chicago area, to perform the lift. Other tasks included working closely and coordinating our design with the project Architectural Firm and other Engineers handling the remaining disciplines, making up the MEP trades.
